During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” the metropolis, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Figure

The 34-year-old figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
